Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal disability program that provides monthly support to qualified disabled individuals. SSDI benefits can be a much needed financial lifeline to people and families affected by a disability. You may want to know: When will I get my SSDI benefits? In this article, our Arizona Social Security Disability Insurance lawyer provides an in-depth explanation of when you will receive your SSDI payment.
You Must Apply and Be Approved for SSDI Benefits
First and foremost, it is important to note that you have to apply for and be approved for SSDI benefits. Applicants must meet the technical and medical requirements. This means:
- Demonstrating that you are “insured” through SSDI based on your work history; and
- Providing medical documentation that establishes that you have a qualifying disability.
Getting approved for SSDI can sometimes be challenging. Indeed, the government initially denies more than two-thirds of claims. Though, a significant number of denials are overturned on appeal.
Know the SSDI Waiting Period (Five Months)
You will not get SSDI benefits for the first month in which you have a qualifying disability. There is a waiting period. The Social Security Administration (SSA) states the following “We will pay your first benefit the sixth full month after the date we find your disability began.” In other words, the government will review your claim, determine the date that your disability actually started, and then make you wait five months before you can start getting your SSDI benefits.
Note: There are very limited exceptions to the waiting period. For any person who developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) after July of 2020, there is no SSDI waiting period.
Your Monthly SSDI Payment Comes on a Wednesday (Based On Date of Birth)
As far as your monthly Social Security payment itself, the date of your payment depends on when you were born. SSDI benefits are generally paid on Wednesdays. Most people get their SSDI benefits in their bank account via direct deposit. Here is a comprehensive overview of the current system for determining the actual payment date of monthly SSDI benefits:
- SSDI Benefits Paid on the Second Wednesday of the Month: All birthdays between the first (1st) and the tenth (10th).
- SSDI Benefits Paid on the Third Wednesday of the Month: All birthdays between the eleventh (11th) and the twentieth (20th).
- SSDI Benefits Paid on the Fourth Wednesday of the Month: All birthdays between the twenty-first (21st) and the end of the month (30th/31st).
